From what I know, Facebook is made in PHP but they created a "compiler" for PHP. So they code in PHP and then compile it to multiply performance increase. Correct me if I'm wrong

Well i think they use AJAX for the real time on the spot update. Like you post a comment and it updated without refreshing the page. I don't know is it right or not... :D

Yup, thats AJAX for posting (like Jawab uses for voting) and then they have "Push AJAX" or Comet so your page gets updated when someone else posts. It can be implemented in any language.
At student level, it is all you will be going to have as a professional experience when you'll apply as a fresh grad.
And also it IS counted as a solid experience in any industry eg, if some telecom opening has a 1-yr. exp. criteria then your internship exp. will be counted.
